Bloody November
Traffic accidents continue to
cost lives. The latest fatal
accident occurred in Curridabat,
when 44 year old Gerardo
Carvajal Duarte slammed his
vehicle unto oncoming bus in
front of the EPA hardware store.
The Hyundai that Carvajal was
driving was completely destroyed
and firefighters had to use the
jaws of life to extract the
Carvajal from the tangled
wreckage, who died later in
hospital.
"He was coming straight for me,
most of his vehicle crossing the
median and into my lane and
since I had a truck on my rigth,
I couldn't avoid that he hit
me", said Carlos Jiménez, the
driver of the bus, who suffered
no injuries in the collision.
The driver of the bus following
Jiménez did saw the accident,
confirming the Jiménez version
of having no option to avoid the
collision, as the Hyundai
slammed into the front of the
bus.
This is the second fatal
accident involving a bus this
weeek. A mother and her two
young children slammed head on
into oncoming bus on Tuesday,
resulting in the death of all
three, on the Interamericana Sur.
Early Sunday morning, two
passenger vehicles collided head
on the Bernardo Soto highway
near San Ramón, killing three
family members and injuring four
others. In both cases, a driver
falling asleep at the wheel was
blamed in the two early morning
accidents.
The cause of yesterday's
accident is still unknown as
Tránsito (traffic) authorities
continue to investigate.
The "official" number of deaths
from traffic accidents for the
month are yet not in, but for
the year it has surpassed the
300 mark.
An there is still December to
go!
