Labour Recommends Shorter Year End Vacation
Public sector should have a shorter holiday season and back to work as possible is the recommendation by the Ministerio de Trabajo to the Presidencia (president's office), giving public employees only 11 days holiday vacation time.

Francisco Morales, ministro de Trabajo (Labour minister) said that public employees should get back to work as soon as possible, not extending the holiday vacation season more than necessary, as there is "too much to do".

The proposal is to give public employees off from Thursday 21 December to Tuesday 2 January.

Morales said that the proposal is in the hands of the ministro de la Presidencia, Rodrigo Arias.

If approved, the typical 14 to 17 days holiday will be shortened to 11. Private sector employers, for the most part, follow the public holiday schedule in giving time off to their employees.

The holiday period affects all government employees and employees of the public institutions like the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) - power and light, the Institutio Costarricence de Electricidad (ICE) - telecommunications and electricity, and the Acueductos y Alcanterillados (AyA) - water and sewer, who will have only emergency crew available.

Notwithstanding, employees of the Ministerio Público dedicated to protecting the citizens, like the police and penal institution, will rotate employee vacation time to provide full time services.

However, legislative deputies and employees of the Poder Judicial (courts) will have the traditional 16 days vacation holiday, beginning on 23 December and returning on 8 January.
