Ortega for Freedom of Press in
Nicaragua
Nicaraguan President-elect
Daniel Ortega promised on
Saturday an unlimited respect
for the freedom of speech during
the government he will lead
after January 10.
Ortega made the commitment
before media directors from the
Asociacion de Medios de
Comunicacion at the headquarters
of the Sandinista National
Liberation Front.
However, he expressed concerned
over the treatment of the
sensationalist press, especially
on television, in Nicaragua, as
it stimulates violence and
crime.
He also pointed out that every
media is free to establish its
own policy on that context.
At the end of the encounter,
directors of local media showed
satisfaction with proposals and
promises of Ortega, who has been
meeting with several sectors
after winning the Nov 5
elections.
