EU Advocates for Unique Interlocutor in Central America
The European Union exhorted Central American countries to take a consensus position that lets them negotiate a future agreement for association between both regional blocks.

The EU has a favourable position to negotiate in block, said Spanish socialist deputy Ramon Obiols Monday in this capital, shortly before ending a two-day visit to Nicaragua.

Obiols said it depends on the Central American governments to establish consensuous positions that will be later negotiated with the EU.

"We are not going to interfere, but we would like the meeting for negotiations to start as soon as possible, because we want to start this association agreement right now," said Obiols, who did not offer any fixed date for the talks.

Obiols and other EU deputies, among them Willy Meyer (Spain) said the agreement will not only be commercial, but also political, social and cultural.

The EU delegation met representatives of the Nicaraguan civil society Tuesday, authorities of the Supreme Electoral Council and leaders of the parties who will be members of the next Nicaraguan Parliament.

They were received by president-elect Daniel Ortega, who was congratulated by the visitors for his electoral victory on November 5, and they had another meeting with salient President Enrique Bolaños.

EU deputies have scheduled to go to Honduras Tuesday, as part of a Central American tour including Costa Rica.
