Chile, Peru hit by earthquakes,
no one injured
A 5.8-Richter-scale earthquake
struck northern Chile at 11:38
a.m. local time, the seismology
institute of Chile University
told media on Monday.
The tremor frightened the
Chileans but did not cause any
serious damage.
The epicenter of the quake was
83 km north of Arica, 48 km deep
into the earth crust. Citizens
of Arica, some 2,000 km from
Chile's capital Santiago, and
the nearby towns of General
Lagos and Putre, all felt the
quake.
A separate quake measuring 5.2
on the Richter scale hit the
southern Peru department of
Tacna at 9:30 local time. The
epicenter was 61 km southeast of
Tacna City, capital of Tacna,
and64 km down the earth.
