Colombian army seizes 1.3 tons
of cocaine
The Colombian army has seized
1.3 tons of cocaine and arrested
five people in a seaside
operation near the Caribbean
islands of San Andres and
Providencia, army sources said
on Monday.
Authorities said that the five
arrested jumped into the sea
carrying drugs with them when
they encountered the army. Army
divers are now searching the
seabed for the cocaine.
The Colombian prosecutors have
detained the five Colombian
perpetrators who were carrying
drugs worth 30 million U.S.
dollars in a speedboat. The
Colombian Air Force, and the
U.S. coastguards patrolling the
area, also joined in the
operation, army officials said.
The operation took place a day
after Colombian police seized a
ton of cocaine, and arrested
five people aboard a light
aircraft heading for the United
States, at an airport in the
Caribbean coastal city of Santa
Marta. One of the people
arrested was a civil aviation
official.
