Nicaragua: Protests against
Drinkable Water Rates
The
Nicaraguan Movimiento Comunal
and Red Nacional de Defensa del
Consumidor (National Network of
Consumers) Sunday warned strong
protests are about to happen in
case announced increase on
drinkable water rate
materializes.
According to those organizations
from civilian society, in case
the increase turns out to be
official, Empresa Nicaragüense
de Acueductos y Alcantarillados
(ENACAL) offices will be
occupied, and will exhort people
to break pipes and not to pay
for the service.
They also have planned to put a
protection resource in Sala de
lo Contencioso y Administrativo
of Supreme Court of Justice
against the illegal increase on
drinkable water rates.
ENACAL requested to the
institutions that controls the
service, the authorization to
increase water service price in
a 45.9 percent, an increase
described as brutal by consumers
defenders.
According to Enrique Picado from
Nicaraguan Movimiento Comunal,
this increase will affect around
600,000 families.
