"No Soy Un Amargado!" Says The Man Responsible For the Kibosh on Zapote
Jorge Muñoz Somarribas, the man who put the "kibosh" on the Zapote fair told the daily Spanish language Diario Extra that he is not an "amargado" - a bitter man.

Muñoz is responsible for the "recurso amparo" (appeal) presented to the Sala Constitucional (Constitutional Court) that effectively killed all plans for the annual fair, that for many Costa Ricans has become a holiday tradition.

Muñoz told Arieal Chavez González of the Extra that he does not have the annual fair that he is a happy and tranquil person, loving a good party and that his reason for the appeal is the concern of the public, both of their safety and health, that would attend the Zapote fair.

Muñoz refused to be characterized as the "bad guy", saying that his action is based on the atrocities he has seen at the Zapote fair during the last 10 years, and though he doesn't even live in or near the area, he felt that someone had to do something.

Muñoz also rejected that notion that he is being paid for his action or that he wants the limelight. The man said that he did only what the Ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) was going to do, and that is concern for the health and safety of the visitors to the annual fair.

Asked if he fears reprisals, like burning down his home, Muñoz said no, but rather that people should be thanking him, for he may have saved them from harm or even their lives those who as a tradition visit the annual fair.

Muñoz told the reporter that he has been going to the Zapote fair since he was a child, including participating in the "toros a la tica" - the practice of running in front of a bull and than making a mad dash for ones life - and that no, he did not have fall off the carousel as a child and that is not the reason why he has stopped the thousands from participating in the annual tradition.
