Peru to Sentence 13 Ex Ministers
The Supreme Court in Peru
readies to rule on the case of
13 ex ministers from the Alberto
Fujimori cabinet involved in the
April 5, 1992 self-coup with
sentences ranging between 12-18
years.
Anti-Corruption Court Chief Omar
Chehade said the supreme Court
will rule on January 2007 on the
coup when Fujimori closed
Congress and the Judiciary and
assumed full powers.
With the Armed Forces's support
he adopted other measures of
force and led a wide corruption
network along intelligence
advisor Vladimiro Montesinos
that also controlled Parliament
and Court.
Montesinos is serving sentence
as at maximum security prison
while Fujimori -that escaped in
2000 to Japan and resigned, is
waiting for trial in Chile to be
extradited to Peru.
Along Fujimori the defendants
are ex ministers Carlos Bolona,
Juan Briones, Absalon Vasquez,
Victor Joy Way, Oscar de la
Puente, Fernando Vega, Augusto
Blacker and Jaime Sobero.
There is also Alfredo Ross,
Victor Malca, Jaime Yoshiyama,
Victor Paredes and Augusto
Antoniolli.
The groups will have to return
an equivalent of 10 million
dollars to public funds and will
be sent seven years to exile.
Briones and Malca are also
charged with kidnapping. They
ordered numerous detentions of
social and political leaders.
