Anti-Abortion Law Drive in
Nicaragua
A local feminist organization
convened a campaign in this
capital Saturday against a Penal
Code reform, outlawing
therapeutic abortion in
Nicaragua.
To penalize therapeutical
abortion is the most violent
action against women, states the
call launched by the "Si Mujer"
Center, alluding the law
approved by the unicameral
Parliament and ratified by
President Enrique Bolaños on
Friday.
The campaign is denominated "25
de Noviembre", because that date
the country celebrates the
International Day of
Non-Violence against Women,
according to an e-mail release.
The therapeutical abortion was a
legal figure in Nicaragua since
1891, and it was applied in
cases of danger for the mother's
life, irreversible damages to
the fetus, or the pregnancy
would have been a product of a
violation.
The anti-abortion law was
boosted by local religious
leaders, who achieved to
introduce the issue in the
November 5 electoral campaign
with the election of Sandinista
Daniel Ortega.
In legal terms, the law predicts
punishments of four and eight
years imprisonment for those
people involved in a
therapeutical abortion.
