Costa Rica Against US Trade Deal
Costa Rica is massively opposed to the free trade treaty promoted by the United States, Guatemalan historian and Costa Rican resident, Rafael Cuevas stated in Havana, Cuba.

At a conference on the socio-political processes and integration of the subcontinent, the specialist said the agreement with Washington, legitimized by the Oscar Arias government, is a strategy designed to totally distort the changing reality of Costa Rica.

The university professor claimed that the US Free Trade Agreement with Central America and the Dominican Republic (US-DR-CAFTA) or the Tratado Libre de Comercio (TLC) as it is known in Costa Rica, only seeks institutional changes to cover investments of the transnationals.

After the basic points of this agreement, negotiated behind the backs of the people, social protests of such magnitude never been seen in that country.

Although there are several points, all are against accepting the unequal treaty and loss of benefits of social security that was achieved in previous governments, he added.

However, legislators still have to get majority approval, the researcher emphasized.

In the battle against this treaty are the state telecom's unions and teacher's associations rose up first, then other sectors like the public universities.
