Arias Asks Honesty of Traffic
Cops
"This government has made the
promise to give back Costa
Ricans the confidence in their
public officials, and the only
way to do that, is to be very
strict and transparent, and
little by little, with our own
examples we will demonstrate
that we are there to serve the
people", were the words of Costa
Rican president, Oscar Arias, to
the Policía de Tránsito
officials during a visit of the
traffic police headquarters.
Accompanying the president on
the visit was the top brass at
the Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT), with the
minister, Karla González;
vice-minister of Transportes,
Viviana Martín; vice-minister of
Obras Públicas, Pedro Castro;
German Marín, director of the
Policía de Tránsito; and Ignacio
Sánchez, presidential advisor to
the Seguridad Vial.
President Arias thanked the
traffic police officials for
their hard work and his words
were to motivate the officials
in their "year end" opeartions
that begins today instead of the
traditional start date of
December 1.
The president said he recognizes
the hard work the officers have
to face in the growing trend of
fatal traffic accidents, caused
mainly by speeding, drinking and
driving and driver carelessness.
Arias asked the officers present
for the ceremony for their
honesty in fulfilling their
duties.
"I am happy to thank you for
what you do for Costa Rican
society, you offer an invaluable
service. Traffic accidents are
the main cause of violent deaths
in the country, and this we have
to change. You are there to call
attention to our
Irresponsibilities and we want
to help you with a new traffic
laws", said Arias.
According to figures by the
Dirección General de la Policía
de Tránsito, during the year
2005, there were 57.129 traffic
accidents, resulting in 20.730
injuries and 616 deaths.
