No International Return for
Wanchope
Paulo Wanchope, who played in
both the 2002 and 2006 World
Cups, has confirmed he has no
intention on going back on his
decision to retire from
international soccer.
The 30 year old is the leading
scorer in Costa Rica's history,
with 45 goals in 70 appearances
for his country.
His decision to focus solely on
club soccer was a major blow to
the Costa Rican national team,
but Wanchope said his mind is
made up.
"I'm maintaining my position of
having retired from the national
team," he told Radio Monumental.
"I don't know if I should have
sent a letter to the federation
to explain my decision to them,
but my spell at the national
team came to an end and it is a
good moment to get used to it."
The former West Ham and
Manchester City striker is now
playing in Argentina for Rosario
Central.
He admitted he had been
pleasantly surprised by the
passion of the fans in the
Apertura tournament.
"I'm experiencing something
totally new," he said.
"Argentinian soccer intense. It
surprised me. It's very similar
to European soccer.
"I had to react quickly because
I had never thought it could
have been like this."
