Faulty Electrical Wires Major
Cause of Fires
The emergency yesterday
afternoon in the Paso Ancho,
south of downtown San José,
added to the list of fires this
year that has grown some 10%
more than the same period in
2005.
The fire that leveled 2 homes
and left nine people on the
streets, is number 567 for the
year. Last week, a number of
homes in Los Guidos de
Desamaparados, also south of San
José, were destroyed by fire.
In most of the cases, especially
in the poor area like Los Guidos,
faulty electrical wiring is the
major cause of the fires, as
residents overload circuits, for
the most that are unprotected.
Most of the homes that burned to
the ground were modest homes
that violated just about every
building code. Firefighters
responding to the calls had
little left to do but to clean
up the mess, as the homes lit up
like matches.
Rooming houses are at the top of
the list as firefighters ask
owners and residents to check
their electrical wiring.
