"Desampa" Turns 144
The cantón de Desamparados - south side of San José - celebrated its 144th birthday with celebrations in every corner of the municipality that has the largest population in the country.

The festivities included art fair, photo exibition and a procession named "Madre de Pueblos", which began in San Marcos de Terrazú, because geographically and politically, Desamparados is mother to a number of towns formed and then later separated, like Santa María de Dota and Pérez Zeledón.

Desamparados, known simply as "Desampa" to those who live there, is cantón number 3 in the province of San José with an estimated 195.000 residents, covering an area of 118.6 square kilometres.
