Compensation Leading To The Arrest of
Escapees Proposed
The escape of four prisoners at
the La Reforma prison last
October 9 not only showed the
failure in the prison's security
system, but is also the
inspiration behind a new law
that would help authorities in
any future escapes from any
prison in the country.
The Minister de Justicia
(Justice Minister) and
vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla, informs that a new
law would financially compensate
any person that would provide
information that leads
authorities to capture prison
escapees.
Chinchilla did not give details
of the proposed law and the
amount of the compensation, but
said she believes that the
financial incentive will be an
important tool for police on the
trail of fugitives from the law.
The minister added that while
the law makes its way into
practice and the money offer is
made, she hopes to count on the
help of citizens, especially in
the capture of the remaining
fugitive of the October prison
escape. Six of the escapees are
again behind bar, while a
seventh is in the cemetery,
following a shootout with police
to avoid capture.
