Tremors Keep Salvadorans Alert
A persistent chain of earth tremors forced El Salvador s National Service of Territorial Studies (SNET) to activate an alert on the islands in the Gulf of Fonseca, the SNET confirmed Wednesday.

The Pacific gulf is shared by El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras.

The Environment Ministry called the residents to pay attention to forecasts, stay calm and support the Civil Protection units.

SNET said subsequent tremors affecting the Pacific, over 1,000 since Thursday, which continued Tuesday, with more than 700 reported since Sunday.

The tremors began near Meanguera Island on October 22 and reached 5.2 on the Richter scale on Thursday.

Two quakes shook Ecuadorian coastal areas and eastern territories 37 minutes apart, but caused neither victims nor damage, the Geophysics Institute reported.

The first of 4.0 degrees was reported at Puna Island, Gulf of Guayaquil, with epicenter at 7.45 miles off coast.

The second, 4.8 degrees and 121.78 miles deep, had its epicenter in southeast Puyo, capital of Pastaza Province, and unlike the first, it was felt in several eastern cities.

Ecuador has felt 15 tremors this month, with strength ranging from 3.7 to 4.8 degrees Richter, but without victims or damage.
