Argentine president announces
military reforms
Argentine President Nestor
Kirchner on Monday announced
reforms to the national defense
system and to the country's
armed forces.
"We are preparing a process of
review, restructuring and
holistic modernization of the
national defense system,"
Kirchner told Argentina's chiefs
of staff at the El Palomar
Military College, where a
ceremony was held to mark the
army's 196th anniversary.
He said Argentina must undertake
a process that will establish a
new basis for organizing the
army and reducing the powers of
the three main military service
chiefs -- the army, navy and air
force.
Official sources said that the
reform would transfer the powers
currently held by the branches'
chiefs to the joint chiefs of
staff, under the command of
Jorge Chevalier, a brigadier
general who would control
operations, staff and finances.
The proposed system is similar
to the U.S. military control
system.
