FTA Worries Honduran Small Businesses
With the implementation of the US-sponsored FTA, Honduran micro, small and mid-sized business owners are deeply concerned they will become non-competitive and be pushed out of the market for lack of capital.

Hondurans are not ready to compete with a market of such magnitude, declared a statement from the Workers’ General Union, referring to the US market, and added that many producers have been forced to change jobs as consumers prefer US-imported products.

According to this association, farmers and producers of the so-called informal economy, with no access to private bank credit, are condemned to failure because of the FTA.

Although the Honduran Private Enterprise Council assures that with FTA implementation, the nation will preserve over 140,000 of the existing direct jobs, the Workers’ Union predicts the unemployment of a great number of micro-business people and the enrichment of the large private enterprises.
