Bus Fair Strifes Ignite
Nicaragua
Clashes between the Nicaraguan
Police and students over raising
public buss tariffs was the main
event of the week.
The protests began three weeks
back due to climbing buss
tariffs by transportation
unions, polarized by the
government silence.
The five-days racket with
university and junior high
students and anti-riot police
resulted in 10 injured in
clashing stones and home-made
bombs with police rubber bullets
and tear gas.
Two busses torched and three
severely damaged by stoning
incited repression, a situation
the people consider
unsustainable.
President Enrique Bolanos played
Pontius Pilate and pinned the
blame on Sadinista (FSLN) Major
of Managua Dionisio Marenco plus
ridiculed his oil deal with
Venezuelan under preferable
terms.
Transportation urges for over
one million dollar monthly
subsidies to cover losses of by
oil price hikes while the
students set Wednesday as
deadline to lower the tariffs to
14 cents of dollar.
The FSLN submitted a draft bill
to subsidize transportation for
the rest of the year with 15
percent the Selective
Consumption Tax on fuel and
buying new busses to implement
the new tariff.
