Boutique coffee
A
small lot of organic coffee sold
for $525 per 100 pounds in the
Gold Crop auction, while in the
New York Stock Exchange the same
amount of coffee sold at $99.60
for July delivery.
The high price beans were part
of a series of small lots which
were analyzed by international
tasters before they went on
auction.
Another lot sold at $351,
followed by others ranging from
$170 to $155. In general, the
so-called boutique coffees have
resulted in a way to overcome
the overall drop in coffee
prices that have assailed Costa
Rican growers in recent years.
A sector spokesman mentioned a
further example, that of four
family plantations from the
Naranjo-Zarcero region that got
$200 per 100 pounds for their
sales to Wataro in Japan and
Starbucks in the United States.
