Uribe remains Colombia's most
popular presidential candidate:
opinion poll
With only one week to go before
Colombia's presidential
elections, incumbent President
Alvaro Uribe remains the most
popular candidate, an opinion
poll showed on Sunday.
According to the poll conducted
by the Datexco research firm on
Saturday, Uribe scored 54.7
percent of vote intentions. The
result meant that Uribe could
get 50 percent of ballots plus
one more vote to win a out-right
presidency.
Meanwhile, left-wing candidate
Carlos Gaviria could score 23.7
percent of vote intentions,
while the Liberal Party's
Horcaio Serpa could get 0.1
percent.
Datexco said that the left-wing
candidate's surprise gain was
due to the fact that the party
has managed to leave behind its
previous internal conflicts and
pool together to support their
candidate.
Serpa lost 10.1 points from the
last poll, due to both the
growth won by Gaviria, and
Uribe's strategy of appealing to
the liberal base.
The pollsters interviewed 1,200
people in 43 cities across the
country, and Sunday is the last
day of campaigning.
