WORLD CUP:
Ticos
Win First Friendly Unimpressive
The first pre-cup Tico test was
Saturday against something
called Breitner’s Bam team, a
regional selection, played in
the town of Lahr in front of
6,500 locals.
Unexpectedly the Costa Rica
selection, with Guimaraes using
almost all of the 23 players at
his disposal, met stiffer that
expected opposition fortunately
finally winning 2-0.
The first goal didn’t happen
until the 70th minute, “the
bullet” Ronald Gomez being the
lucky scorer, and the second was
in the 88th by Harold Wallace.
Paul Breitner, of 1974 German
World Campion famed was not
impressed by the Ticos, and
stated after the game, “Germany
will win by 2-3 goals easily”,
when the two meat on June 9th in
the opener. Sure, if you can’t
beat “Bam’s” team…
Next for the Ticos are
friendlies against Catalunia,
another regional selection, on
the 24, then Ucraine on the
28th, then two days later
against Czech Republic.
