Hit Archeological Areas in
Mexico
Mexico´s National Anthropology
and History Institute (INAH)
reported Sunday that forest and
farming fires in Yucatan
Peninsula have affected the
Mayan archeological zones.
INAH regional director Federica
Sodi told the media that among
the areas damaged are Oxkintoc
and Chichén Itzá. The latter is
one of the symbols of that
aboriginal culture.
In Quintana Roo state,
authorities are assessing the
evacuation of people in Leona
Vicario, Cancun municipality,
currently surrounded by three
forest fires.
Even in the famous Cancun
resort, smoke clouds have
covered extensive areas causing
a 15 percent reduction of the
tourist demand.
