UN Criticizes Latin America Neoliberal Reforms
Neoliberal reforms in America in the 90s did not solve the financing and coverage of social protection systems, because they did not consider the reality of the regional industrial markets and the limited economic development, a UN report issued Thursday found.

Other determining factors were the slow generation of jobs and the increase of informal work, affecting 47 percent of workers over the last ten years.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) suggested a new pact that would consider inequalities and budget restrictions as objective problems to face, and one favoring social protection.

The document emphasizes the need to promote policies able to generate more and better employment sources, but stresses this should not be the only way to protect majorities in the short and mid- terms.

The UN organization calls to strengthen solidarity mechanisms, improve the quality of services and make a more effective use of e available resources in order to expand employment capacities.
