Guatemala Preps Arms Control
Event
Illegal trade of weapons causes
concern in the Guatemalan
national territory and in the
rest of Central America, since
its geographical position makes
it a bridge for illegal traffic
to the north.
The encounter is a prelude to UN
meeting on the prevention,
fighting and elimination of
illegal trade of small and light
weapons next June, and it opened
today in the city of Antigua
Guatemala for three days, with
representatives from 30 Latin
American and Caribbean
countries.
At the opening session,
Guatemalan Disarmament Committee
president Juan Carlos Leal said
that illegal trade of weapons in
the region is linked to drug
trafficking and organized crime.
He added that during the
conference, a date will be set
for the next UN summit on
illegal traffic.
