To
Early To Evaluate Banana Imports
The Costa Rican minister of
Foreign Trade, Manuel González,
states that it would be
premature to measure the effects
of the new European banana
import tariff, which has been
applied since the beginning of
January on Latin American banana
imports.
“Too little time has passed, to
really know what the impact on
banana exports to the EU will
be”, says González.
He added that the prices during
the first quarter have remained
stable – without quoting any
figures.
During the first quarter of this
year, Costa Rican banana exports
increased with 23,6% from us$115
million in 2005 to us$ 142.2
million this year, according to
the trade promotion office
Procomer.
This improvement was realized
after the recovery of the
unfavourable weather conditions
at the beginning of 2005. This
resulted in a loss of turnover
volume of 8 millon boxes.
According to González the
disadvantageous consequences
will become clear on the medium
long term.
