Venezuelan police seize 1.1 tons
of marijuana, 1.5 tons of
cocaine
Venezuelan police seized 1.1
tons of marijuana and 1.5 tons
of cocaine in two separate
operations, local media reported
on Tuesday.
The cocaine seizure took place
in Curamichate, in the northwest
state of Falcon. Police found
the cocaine hidden in an
inflatable boat and arrested two
suspects.
Jesus Itriago, head of the
anti-drug unit of the Scientific
Police, said it was possible
that the drug had been thrown
into the sea off Falcon from
planes by accomplices of the two
arrested, adding that the
traffickers were part of a
network that smuggled cocaine
through the Caribbean into
Spain.
Separately, Eddie Achique, head
of the Nueva Esparta department
of the Scientific Police, told
Venezuelan television station
Globovision that police had
seized 1.1 tons of marijuana in
Nueva Esparta, a Caribbean
coastal state known for its
tourism.
The police arrested one person
in the case, charging him with
smuggling.
The drug shipment was on its way
to the Caribbean islands of San
Vicente and Martinica, from
where it would be shipped to the
United States or Europe, Achique
added.
