Domestic Violence Increased
During World Cup Play
During the 2006 Word Cup soccer
games we not only saw the Costa
Rican national team - the sele -
lose all three games, but, also
an increase in family violence.
According to the Instituto sobre
Alcoholismo y Farmacodependencia
(IAFA), the consumption of
alcohol is alarming and during
events like the World Cup,
domestic violence increases. The
IAFA says that some 620.000
Costa Ricans consume alcohol and
one half of the population
affected directly or indireclty
by alcoholism.
The IAFA is pushing for the
elimination of beer and liquor
companies promoting sporting
events. For the IAFA, it is not
necessary for liquor companies
to promote sporting events or
their products during sporting
events as they are already
heavily promoted. And the
consumption of alcohol during
sporting events is not good for
public health and affects
production and the development
of the country.
Annually some 395.700.000 litres
of liquor are consumed in the
country or some 1.084.000 litres
daily. 620.000 people have
problems with alcohol while an
estimated 250.000 are
alcoholics.
The IAFA says 7 out of 10 people
in Costa Rican consume alcohol,
beginning drinking at age 13.
The worst of the news is that
the IAFA estimates that one out
of every three deaths from
traffic accidents, homicides and
suicides are directly caused by
the consumption of alcohol.
