Grecia Will See Effect Of End of
"Guaro" Monopoly
The Sala Constitucional
(Constitutional Court) decision
to open up the monopoly held by
the state agency, Fábrica
Nacional de Licores (Fanal), on
"guaro" will hurt not only the
company that produces and
markets the "Cacique" liquor but
possibly the entire community of
Grecia and surrounding areas.
Nicaragua Makes Official Request
For Report on Dredging of San
Juan River by Costa Rica
Nicaragua made an "official"
request from Costa Rican
authorities to report on the
dredging work of the Río San
Juan (San Juan river) that
divides the two countries. The
San Juan clearly belongs to
Nicaragua, however, Costa Rica
has navigation rights.
Growth in "Piques" Prime Concern
for Tránsito
"Piques" is the name for street
racing that has grown in
considerably over the last
couple of years and the Policía
de Tránsito are determined to
stop it. Not only is it illegal
and dangerous, it has proven
fatal on a number of occasions.
Flower and Plant Exports
An increase in employment in
rural areas is expected as a
result of an expansion of
exports of flowers and
decoration plants this year, the
Costa Rican Flower Growers
Association announced.
Wendy’s and Cinnabon Soon in
Costa Rica
U.S. fast food chains Wendy´s
and Cinnabon are to start
operations here towards the end
of next July.

Reserves
The Central Bank of Costa Rica
disclosed that its overall
amount of hard currency reserves
dropped by us$227 million during
the last two months, but that
they remain high, at over
us$2.53 billion.
