Monday?
Today, Monday, July 31, is a
holiday. Many are not sure what
holiday it is and why it is
being celebrated. The majority
of Guanacastecos celebrated
their holiday last Tuesday, July
25, the day of the Anexión de
Nicoya, when it became part of
Costa Rica.
First "Romero" Death
Guillermo Rodríguez Álvarez, a
26 year old man from Belén, was
the first fatality this year as
he was struck by a car as he
walked along the route on his
way to Cartago to pay homage to
the Virgen de Los Angeles.
Better Roads in 3-4 Years,
Vice-Minister Says
A push by the current government
to improve the roads is
underway, but it will be at
least three or four years before
we can notice any difference,
Pedro Castro Fernández,
vice-minister of public works,
told the Spanish daily La Prensa
Libre.

Immigration Official Charged in
Issuing False Work Permits and

(immigration) official earned
some ¢30 million colones
(us$58.000) in only one month
for providing visas and work
permits to a group of South
Americans last November. The
name of the 47 year old former
immigration official was not
revealed by immigration
director, Mario Zamora, who made
a formal complaint of fraud to
the Ministerio Público last May
22.
