ICE Expects Boruca Hydro Studies
Tender
Costa Rica's state monopoly on
electricity and
telecommunications, the
Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) expects to
launch bidding this half for
complementary studies into the
Boruca hydroelectric project, a
project official said.
The work will complement
existing technical, social,
environmental and financial
studies for an initial project
that envisioned generation
capacity of 709 MW.
The Inter-American Development
Bank will help finance the
one-year studies that will cost
some usS$4 million.
The updated project would
generate 631MW and be built some
40 km upstream from the original
project on the General Superior
river, the official added.
A new site was chosen because it
is geologically more favorable,
indigenous residents would not
have to be relocated and it only
would impact 4km of the
Inter-American highway versus
40km in the original project,
the official said.
ICE has three other generation
projects under development, two
of which are under construction:
Cariblanco (80MW) and Pirrís
(128MW).
These are due to begin operating
in 2007 and 2009/10
respectively, said the official.
The other project is the
Garabito thermo project
(120-180MW) that is in the
tender process.
