Super Long Weekend Begins Today
Today begins a super long
weekend - for some 5 days of
rest from the daily stress of
work and a time to spend with
the family. Some will head to
the beach or mountain resorts,
while a great number will be
spending the time walking,
walking to Cartago in a show of
religious faith. And for the
unemployed or looking for a
better job and are fluent in
English, there is the job fair.
The annual "romeria" to Cartago
officially begins today and ends
on Wednesday August 2. Many will
head out early for the
pilgrimage beating the rush that
is expected on Monday and
Tuesday.
Some one million are expected to
make the walk to the Basilica de
Los Angeles in Cartago to pay a
visit to the Virgen de Los
Angeles. Some will be there to
ask for a miracle, while others
to give thanks. In any event,
the annual event affects
everyone.
The Asociación de Seguridad y
Embellecimiento de Carreteras
Nacionales (Asecan), the people
who keep the highways clean, are
asking the "romeros" to please
not throw trash on the streets
and use the garabage cans placed
along the route to dispose of
food and beverage containers.
Last year Asecan says it swept
up some six tonnes of thrash
along the 13.2 kilometre route
from San José to Cartago.
Asecan and the Ministerio de
Obras Pública y Transporte (MOPT)
are asking for the social
responsability of sponsors who
will be offering promotional
products to the "romeros", to
install adequate receptacles for
the refuse their generate,
especially around the areas
where they distribute their
products.
The super long weekend can be up
to five days as Monday (July 31)
is a legal holiday in
celebration of the Anexión de
Nicoya on July 25, that was
moved to the following Monday by
the former Pacheco government
decree. All banks are closed and
most companies will be closed
for business.
For some, business will come to
a stand still as many companies
close down for the religious
observation of August 2, though
it is not a legal holiday.
All government offices and
agencies will be closed on
Monday. However, some will have
a greatly reduced staff and
services will be slower than
usual.
Advice is to check ahead first.
