"He Gave Me The Kiss of Judas",
Maureen's Mother Speaks Out
The family of Maureen Hidalgo
finally spoke out yesterday on
their feelings of the murder of
their daughter by ther husband.
"If I had him in front of me, I
would tell him he is the most
cynical and hypocrite man I
know. He even gave me a kiss at
my daughter's wake. I understand
now that it was a kiss from
Judas", said Maureen's mother,
Vega Mora, as she unleashed her
anger against her daughter's
husband and prime suspect in the
murder of the 28 year old woman.
Beside her was her husband,
Miguel Hidalgo and their other
children, Miguel Jr. and Marina.
The family had kept quiet during
the entire ordeal, from the
disappearance of Maureen to the
finding of her body on the side
of the road to the arrest and
detention of Luis Fernando
Burgos.
"I feel betrayed by Luis. I had
expected my daughter to have had
a happy and full life with him",
said Miguel, Maureen's father.
Burgos is maintaining his
innocence though he has been
formally accused and detained
for the murder of his wife. A
judicial court has ordered him
to six months of preventive
detention, being held at the
Hatillo police station instead
of the San Sebastián jail, for
his own protection. Burgos was a
public defender, like his wife,
at the Poder Judicial and on
occasions served time on the
bench as a judge.
Burgos, then free, attended the
wake and funeral of his wife
following the discover of the
body. He was at the side of his
wife's family all the time. On
July 15, the day before the body
of his wife was found, he denied
to the local press any
involvement in his wife's
disappearance.
"When Maureen married we thought
we would have another son
(Burgos), as son-in-law that
would be part of our family, but
it never happened", said Doña
Vera.
Doña Vera added that on a number
of occasions, Burgos had hit
Maureen, showing up at her home
with bruises.
Miguel told of the last time he
saw his daughter alive on July
10, a couple of days before she
was reported missing and less
than a week before her body was
found.
"She went fast. She told us that
she had to get home before he
(Burgos) got home and left
almost without saying goodbye",
said Miguel.
