Commission to Control Panama
Canal Expansion
As part of the the modernization
of the Panama Canal Zone, an Ad
Hoc commission was created by
seven members to fulfill
mechanisms of transparency and
implementation of the project.
The construction of three locks
valued at $5.2 billion will be
approved or rejected in a
referendum on October 22.
According to official sources,
the Commission will be made up
of several civil organizations,
one member of the National
Assembly and another from the
Executive.
The 28 Bill, through which the
modernization proposal will be
approved, stipulates that the
commission will receive
quarterly reports of the process
of public contracting and
development of works, to
evaluate and formulate
observations and
recommendations.
After signing the bill by
President Martin Torrijos and
its publication in the "Gaceta
Oficial" last week, the
initiative entered a new stage
to conclude in the popular
consultation.
