Japanese Navy Trains in Honduras
Three ships of the Japanese Navy
are participating exercises in
the Honduran Caribbean, which is
considered a sample of Japanese
naval power in the region.
After their arrival at Port
Cortes, local authorities said
the objective of the government
of Japanese Prime Minister
Junichiro Koizumi was to
strengthen links between Japan
and Honduras.
“The purpose is to exchange
experiences and knowledge
between military from both
countries,” said Japanese Consul
Karim Qubain.
The Japanese naval squad is
formed of the Kashima tv-3508,
Amagiri dd-154, and Yamagiri
tv-3515, which were visited
today by Honduran President
Manuel Zelaya Tuesday, and
includes 800 soldiers under the
command of Japanese Rear Admiral
Takanobu Sasaki for the training
of 193 new Navy officers.
The Japanese ships are expected
remain anchored until July 21
and the public will be able to
visit the ships in the
afternoons.
Recently the Japanese government
contributed a little more than
1.28 million dollars to
Honduras, to improve national
security.
