Panama Prepares for Fourth
Referendum
Preparations for the fourth
national referendum in Panama on
Oct 22, this time for the
extension of the Canal, were
started Tuesday by the Electoral
Court (TE), with an allotment of
nearly eight million dollars.
Sources from the TE and the
National Assembly said that in
view of the announcement of the
enactment of a related law in
the Official Gazette, they
immediately began organizing the
event regarding the extension of
the Panama Canal.
In a solemn ceremony Monday,
President of the Republic Martin
Torrijos signed the legislation
to activate the TE mechanism for
the referendum, by which
Panamanians will say whether
they back the proposal to
construct a third set of locks
in the Panama Canal.
