Nicaragua Denounces Costa Rica
to IACHR
Nicaragua charged Costa Rica
with xenophobia and
discrimination against
immigrants at the 125th OAS
Inter-American Human Rights
Commission in session in
Guatemala.
Nicaragua specifically denounced
two deaths, that of Canda
Mairena, ripped by a rottweiler
in front of eight policemen, the
owner of a workshop, and the
guards, and the lynching of
Ariel Urbina.
Jose Antonio Tijerino,
Nicaragua´s representative
before the IACHR, termed the
Costa Rican suggestion of a
six-month investigation
“irrational and absurd”.
The denunciation by Tijerino
also includes general
discrimination of the Nicaraguan
community in Costa Rica where,
until a few years ago, blacks
neither had an ID nor were
allowed to vote.
Other IACHR cases in Central
America to be heard this week
include the 1980-1982
disappearance of Salvadoran
children, the aftermath of the
over exploitation of natural
resources, and the situation of
women.
