12 Hours Road Closure Became 34
The InterAmericana Sur is
finally re-opened, after 34
hours of being totally shut down
at kilometre 336 to repair a
sewer pipe had been damaged due
to the heavy rains in the area
and was causing dangerous
driving conditions on the
highway.
Originally the Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
and the Consejo Nacional de
Vialidad (Conavi) had announced
a closure of 12 hours, but it
took 22 hours more than expected
to make the repairs.
The highway was finally
re-opened at 4pm Friday for the
hundreds of vehicles that were
left without a pass through the
area. The highway is the major
route fro trucks and buses from
San José to the southern zone
and Panama.
Without saying many were upset
at the extended closure,
blocking off passage to the
transport of goods and buses
that regularly provide service
through the area. The Fuerza
Pública (police) report that
they had to attend to a number
of disturbance calls due to the
closure.
Police also report that they
received a number of complaints
of assaults and robberies by
unscrupulous who offered to
assist crossing when in reality
their intent was to rob them,
particularly women who had their
purses stolen.

by foot from Thursday morning to
Friday afternoon, after the
highway was closed to effect
repairs to the sewer system. The
original plan called for a 12
hour closure while it took 34
hours to carry out the work.
