Gasoline Prices Higher Today
Didn't fill up last night? Well,
you will be paying ˘19 colones
more for a litre of super
gasoline and ˘16 colones for
regular, beginning today.
Gasoline prices took the sixt
jump today reaching a high of
˘575 colones for a litre of
super, up from ˘556 yesterday;
and ˘550 for a litre of regular,
up from ˘534 yesterday. Diesel
prices was not affected.
According to Fernando Herrero,
the new regulator of public
prices, the approval of the
price increase will allow RECOPE
- the state oil refinery and
distributor of gasoline products
- to lose less in the face of
rising price of crude oil on
world markets.
Herrero also announced that a
new calculation formula for
price increases that will raise
prices in smaller amounts on a
weekly basis than one large
increase like that of today.
The new formula will allow
Recope to adjust its prices in
smaller increments each week.
The old formula would force
Recope to wait until a change in
the price of crude on world
market reached a specified
percentage to raise or lower
prices at the local pump.
The price of a barrel of crude
oil closed at us$77.03
yesterday, closing the week with
a 4% increase. Under the old
formula, Recope would have to
wait for a 5% increase before it
could ask the ARESEP - the state
regulator of public prices and
services - for a price increase
at the pumps.
Gasoline prices are uniform
at all gasoline stations in the
country. The only variance is on
the level of service offered by
the retailer.
