Limón Under Police Siege
More than 60 police officials of
the Fuerza Pública, assisted by
the Organismo de Investigación
Judicial and DIS and Interpol,
have been searching every square
centimetre of Limón in an
intensive effort to find the
killer of killers of one of
their own last Sunday.
The authorities, in their
intensive efforts, have set up
road blocks on all roads,
searching each and every vehicle
and asking for identification.
Trained dogs have joined police
on hikes by a special unit that
specializes in mountains and two
small aircraft have been flying
over the area, giving support to
the ground searches.
Authorities are also asking
residents of the area,
especially owners of "pulperias"
(small convenience stores) and
"sodas" (restaurant) to report
any unfamiliar faces to their
area. Police say the men have to
eat and drink, hoping that
someone suspecting will be
reported.
Yesterday afternoon, police
thought they had their man. A
man was spotted coming from the
mountains dressed in a bloody
t-shirt and carrying a weapon.
Police intercepted the man and
detained him for questioning,
but was later released when they
were fully convinced that the
man had had nothing to do with
the murder of Mario González
González, who had been a police
officer for 11 years and was
killed in the line of duty.
Forensic experts have detailed
every part of the vehicle that
was being driven by the suspects
before fleeing into the
mountains. Specialized equipment
has helped recover saliva and
hairs of the suspects which
police believe will be crucial
for a positive identification
once they are captured.
And captured they will.
The police operation is centred
mainly in the area of Valle de
La Estrella, but every corner of
Limón is being searched.
González was gunned down when
the suspected fired at him and
missing his partner, two
officers who manning the Valle
de La Estrella police station,
as the men fled from a robbery
in Cahuita. The men took some 22
paintings, us$9.000 in cash and
a Toyota pick up from the
robbery and shot González when
they were asked to stop.
