Census Will Focus On The Number
of Televisions in Each Home
More than 14.000 homes will have
their doors knocked on by census
takers in all areas of the
country as the Instituto
Nacional de Estadística y Censos
(INEC) carries out the "Encuesta
de Hogares".
On Monday and until next August
9, the INEC will spend some ¢130
million colones (us$254.000) to
know first hand the
sociodemographics of the
country. Costa Ricans will be
questioned on the economy, work
and living conditions among many
other things.
Traditional questions on
employment and income, as well
as home many appliances -
television sets, etc -
cellular phones, fixed lined
phones, cable or satellite
hookup, computers, fax machines
and internet will be part of the
focus of the census. Residents
will also be questioned on the
vaccination of children,
lactation and social programs.
INEC officials are asking Costa
Ricans to please ensure that the
census taker at the door is
carrying proper identification
to avoid the possibility of
criminals trying to pass as
census takers, taking advantage
of the trust of the public.
The last such census was taken
31 years ago. For this census
technical statistics were sued
to select there areas and the
homes that census takers will
knock on.
INEC said that between July 10
and 22 they will concentrate in
the Región Central (San José,
Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago);
from July 25 to August 9, the
census takers will then visit
the the rest of the country
Guanacaste, Puntarenas and Limón,
between the hours of 8am and
8pm.
The first results of the census
will be available at the
beginning of November.
