Latin American Gas Pipeline
Begins
Presidents of Venezuela, Hugo
Chavez; Colombia, Alvaro Uribe
and Panama, Martin Torrijos, are
in western Zulia state Saturday
for the groundbreaking of the
Colombia-Venezuela gas pipeline.
Their presence in the
inauguration of the Latin
American gas route reinforces
the chances to connect Panama,
plus Costa Rica, Nicaragua and
Honduras.
Jorge Luis Sanchez, president of
Ente Nacional del Gas, said the
project will connect Punta
Ballenas, Colombia, to Maracaibo,
Venezuela.
It foresees the construction of
another duct from Venezuela to
the Colombian Pacific Coast to
facilitate exports of oil to
Central American and Asian
countries, including China.
The near 174 mile 26 inch pipe
will deliver 500 million cubic
feet of gas daily, although it
will be set in motion May 2007
with 150 million.
Venezuela and Colombia share an
over 1,367 mile border so the
undertaking will improve living
standards with permanent jobs
and social projects like
electricity and water supply,
Sanchez stressed.
