Panama May Redistribute Energy
Panamanian First Vice President
and Foreign Affairs Minister
Samuel Lewis declared Friday
that his country might become a
center of energy redistribution
for Central America.
In the news conference, Lewis
responded to a question from
Prensa Latina concerning
Panama´s deliberation over
linking up with the gas pipeline
to be built by Colombia and
Venezuela.
He said that Panamanian
President Martin Torrijos will
meet on Saturday with Presidents
Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) and
Alvaro Uribe (Colombia) in La
Guaira on the
Colombian-Venezuelan border with
the expectation of working
together on the project.
Lewis mentioned the Venezuelan
government´s offer to construct
a refinery plant able to refine
150,000 barrels a day, and
stated this offer did not
prevent a regional refining
industry.
He concluded by saying that if
the agreements in Caracas go as
planned, it would not be
impossible that Panama might
become a regional energy
redistribution center.
