Mexico between Change and
Neoliberalism
Mexican registered voters are
deciding as of 8:00 (local time)
Sunday between ratifying the
current neoliberal policy or
taking on the changes offered by
opposition candidates.
In essence, the two political
forces which have been the focus
of attention throughout the long
electoral campaign that started
on Jan 19, have presented their
options around these
alternatives.
However, the presidential
dispute was far from having any
ideological tint, even in the
case of left or center-left
groups.
Three candidates appear to have
winning options, with very close
margins in the latest surveys.
They are Andres Lopez Obrador,
Felipe Calderon (who run the
most expensive campaign in
Mexican history) and the more
distant Roberto Madrazo, who has
the support of the Institutional
Revolutionary Party (PRI), which
boasts the country´s most
powerful electoral machine.
The latest surveys have given
Lopez Obrador a 2-5 point lead
over Calderon, and a 6-11 point
lead over Madrazo.
