Guatemalan Teachers Protest
Teachers are organizing a march
in Guatemala City this week to
demand the resignation of
Education Minister Maria del
Carmen Aceña and protest
neoliberal policies.
National Teachers´ Assembly
leader Joviel Acevedo said
professors, students and people
in general from across the
nation will stage the protest.
They will march from Central
Park to Congress, in front of
which they will rally to demand
a vote of distrust against Aceña.
The House of Representatives
will take up the controversial
proposal of privatizing
education.
The teachers guild has rejected
a package of reforms the
minister pushed to gradually
privatize public education by
transferring some State services
to communities and firms.
They believe her proposal
constitutes a mercantilist
vision of education and
eliminates historic achievements
of the sector.
Among other demands, teachers
ask the government to keep wage
increases, a larger education
budget, expansion of school
dinners and the creation of more
jobs.
