Nicaragua Seeking End to Strike
Nicaraguan government and Parliamentary majority parties are endeavoring Sunday to find a solution to the public transport strike underway in Managua.

The first meeting, on Saturday evening at the Executive headquarters, resulted in the government´s support of Managua´s Mayor Dionisio Marenco´s initiative to fix a tax over fuels to subsidize transport workers.

However, the Executive would not reform the national budget to give the more than a million dollars demanded by public transport management.

Strikers, who have paralyzed the service in this capital since February 7, say with that figure the losses caused by constant fuel price rises would be counteracted .

Maranco´s proposal includes applying a five percent tax per gallon on private-vehicle owners.

Meanwhile, representatives of the minority parties did not back the idea and liberals did not attend the gathering.
