Inmates Ask the Win to Fulfill Promises in Casting Vote
More than 5.000 inmates at Costa Rican penintentiaries cast their vote yesterday, with Oscar Arias being the favourite. The inmates who voted asked the winner, whoever that may be, to fulfill their promises.

Two inmates that were not able to vote where the high profile Catholic church priest, Minor Calvo and his partner, Omar Chavez, who are in the San Sebastian jail. Prison officials said that the prisoners at San Sebastian could not vote. The jail is a holding facility for those awaiting trial and/or the results of a criminal investigation against them.

Patricia Vega, Ministra de Justicia, said that the decision not to allow the San Sebastian prisoners to vote was based on security at the jail. The penitenciaries have different security measures and there is no concern for the possibility of escape as it may exist at San Sebastian.

Inmates who chose to exercise their right to vote got an additinal bonus yesterday, a cigarette. Cigarettes are a precious commodity in Costa Rican jails and yesterday inmates were quick to ask for one from those operating the voting booths at the prisons.

Oscar Arias made a personal visit during the day at the women only prison, El Buen Pastor, in San José. Many of the prisoners who voted said they voted Arias because he was the only candidate to make the visit.
