Chemical Victims Rally in
Nicaragua
The Natural Resources Protection
Foundation of Nicaragua
announced on Wednesday that it
is organizing a campaign of
solidarity with the victims of
Nemagon, a pesticide used by the
banana transnationals some time
ago.
The coordinator of the
activities, Nancy Amaya, said
that sit-ins will be carried out
at different traffic circles of
Managua capital on Saturday,
while a concert with well-known
Nicaraguan singers is being
organized.
The activists are also
collecting 100,000 signatures
all over the country in support
to a document requesting the
National Assembly deputies to
show greater concern for people
affected by the pesticide.
La Prensa daily quoted Amaya on
Wednesday as saying that the aim
of the campaign is to sensitize
the Nicaraguan population to the
situation of the Nemagon
victims.
Dibromochloropropane, or Nemagon,
was indiscriminately used by
banana companies in Nicaragua
and other Central American
countries until the early 80's.
