Nicaragua Celebrates Fidel
Birthday
Solidarity with Cuba became
music during the celebration in
Nicaragua of Fidel Castro s 80th
birthday, with the participation
of singer and songwriter Carlos
Mejias Godoy and other renowned
local artists.
The concert, held at the capital
s Dance School on Thursday this
week, was organized by
Sandinista leader Tomas Borge
and attended by hundreds of
Nicaraguans eager to make
evident their good wishes for
the Cuban Revolution leader.
"Fidel s figure goes beyond any
party and ideology," Mejias
Godoy told Prensa Latina,
shortly before going on stage.
The singer, who in the recent
presidential elections aspired
for Nicaragua s vice presidency
with splinter party "Movimiento
Renovador Sandinista," wished
that the Cuban statesmans
example be used to facilitate
Sandinista unity.
In addition to singing his
emblematic song dedicated to
FSLN founder Carlos Fonseca
Amador, and ballads on other
popular issues, Mejias Godoy
sang a poem musicalized by Borge
dedicated to Fidel Castro.
